The Van Gogh Museum regularly acquires drawings and prints from the period 1840-1914 to provide context for the life and work of Vincent van Gogh. For this presentation a representative selection has been made of the almost 200 works acquired in the past five years.

                                                                                     Prints of cafés and theatres

The district of Montmartre in Paris was a centre of artistic innovation at the end of the nineteenth century. Van Gogh lived there from 1886 to 1888 and aligned himself with the avant-garde. Toulouse-Lautrec and Steinlen made their famous illustrations and posters there in the 1890s, and when Picasso arrived in Paris in 1900, Montmartre was just the place to be if you were an artist.

This exhibition gives an impression of this flourishing artistic climate.

                                                                                                                 Blossom

Blossoming trees fascinated Van Gogh. When in search of sunlight and peace he took up residence in Arles in 1888, he made one painting after another in the orchards around the city. Blossom presents a selection of his paintings of flowers from the Van Gogh Museum’s collection.

                                                       Van Gogh's studio practice: Canvases re-used

Vincent van Gogh regularly made a painting on a canvas he had used before. He began doing this in May of 1885, when he was still living in Nuenen, and continued this practice in his Paris years (1886-1888). Presentation in the context of the research project Van Gogh's studio practice.

                                               New perspectives: Van Gogh in Antwerp and Paris

Vincent van Gogh resided in Antwerp and Paris from the end of 1885 to the beginning of 1888. The 93 paintings from that period in the Van Gogh Museum’s permanent collection have been extensively studied, yielding many new insights. Furthermore, the exhibition  presents the most crucial moments in Van Gogh’s artistic development.
